Shared Island Stories stands with the Carriacou Museum and Historical Society’s Call to Action – help support Carriacou’s heritage!
As part of ongoing Shared Island Stories research, Principal Investigator and Project Lead, Professor Karen Brown, recently visited the Carriacou Museum and Historical Society, a key site of cultural memory, heritage, and community life on the island. In the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl (July 2024), Carriacou faced devastating loss. Homes were destroyed, communities disrupted—and the island’s only museum, a guardian of history, memory, and identity, was severely damaged.
For decades, the museum has preserved:
• Oral histories of elders
• Stories of migration, resistance, and resilience
• Heritage rooted in generations of traditional knowledge and cultural practice
Now, there is an urgent and inspiring effort to rebuild, not just what was lost, but something stronger, more resilient, and future-facing.
Their vision includes:
• A hurricane-resilient museum structure
•Digitised archives to safeguard knowledge
• Spaces for youth, education, and community healing
•A renewed platform for cultural identity and sustainable futures
